On
February 25, 1994, The India Gospel League formalized an integral
part of its medical outreach program by registering the Sharon Medical
and Charitable Trust under the Indian Trusts Act of 1882. This Trust
aims to provide quality medical care through the Sharon Cancer Center
and General Hospital and Sharon Diagnostic Center. As one of the very
few cancer centers in the country, it offers comprehensive cancer
treatment for those in and around Salem living below the poverty line.
In 1998
the Cancer Center was fully functioning along with the Cancer Center
Pharmacy and Hospice, all located at the hospital site at Sharon Gardens.
The hospitals
operation theatre was opened on June 19, 2000, and the first surgery,
a Hemi-mandibulectomy, was performed. Sharon has two of the finest
operation theaters in Salem.
The scope
for training health workers is enormous. Recognizing this need, the
Sharon Cancer Center initiated the Sharon School of Nursing in 1997.
This nursing school not only helps train nurses for the hospital but
also for other hospitals.
